Martial Arts and Self Defence Classes in Bracknell

Bracknell Martial Arts Classes
Bracknell dojo welcomes children, teenagers and adults in a single session, with no separate age group split. This creates a great atmosphere.
The teaching team at Bracknell includes three instructors: John Moses (2nd Dan Black Belt), Andrew Morten (1st Kyu), and Vuyo Halimana (1st Dan Black Belt). Vuyo is one of the few female martial arts instructors in the Bracknell area, which is significant for women and girls who may feel more comfortable knowing a female instructor is actively involved in the session. Between them, the team brings a mix of power, technical precision, and encouragement that keeps classes challenging without being intimidating.
Every session covers techniques drawn from multiple martial arts disciplines: karate, boxing, wrestling, Krav Maga, kung fu, judo, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, kickboxing, and Muay Thai. We do not run separate classes for each style. Instead, our instructors select the most pragmatic techniques from each discipline and teach them as part of a single, practical self-defence programme.
No martial arts experience is needed to join. A typical session starts with a warm-up and stretching, moves into technique instruction and partner drills. The intensity is scaled for each student individually. If you want a sense of what your first session will look like, read our beginner's guide.
All instructors are DBS checked and first-aid trained. Shuhari has been running since 2010, with 23 instructors across six Berkshire locations, more than 8,670 students trained, and a 4.9-star Trustpilot rating from over 250 verified reviews.
St Michael's Centre is accessible from Crowthorne, Sandhurst, Wokingham, Binfield, Warfield, and Easthampstead, with parking available on site.

Frequently Asked Questions
When and where do Bracknell classes run?
We train at St Michael's Centre on Crowthorne Road (RG12 7ER) every Monday and Wednesday from 18:00 to 19:00.
Are children and adults in the same class?
Yes. At Bracknell, every session is a mixed class with children, teenagers, and adults training together. Our three instructors manage the groups so that each student works at the right intensity for their age and experience. Many of our Bracknell families find this format builds mutual respect and creates a shared experience that carries beyond the dojo.
Do you have female instructors?
Yes. Vuyo Halimana is a 1st Dan Black Belt instructor who teaches at our Bracknell dojo. Having a female instructor on the team matters, particularly for women and girls who may feel more comfortable training in an environment where they can see themselves represented. Shuhari also offers dedicated female self-defence classes led by Sensei Vee.
I've never done martial arts before. Is that a problem?
Not at all. Most of our Bracknell students started with zero experience. The instructors pair you with an appropriate training partner and adjust the pace to match your ability. Our first class guide walks through exactly what to expect.
What martial arts do you teach?
We teach a self defence system with techniques from multiple disciplines: karate, boxing, wrestling, Krav Maga, kung fu, judo, BJJ, kickboxing, and Muay Thai. Our martial arts guide explains each discipline in detail.
Is the training practical for real-life self defence?
Yes. Our curriculum is built around techniques that work under pressure, not just in controlled drills. Sessions include partner work, pad work, sparring, and scenario-based self-defence. The goal is to prepare you for realistic situations, not choreographed ones. For a detailed breakdown, read our self-defence comparison.
What should I wear to my first class?
Comfortable gym clothes are fine. There is no need to buy anything before your first session. If you continue training, you can get a uniform at the dojo when you are ready.
Is there a free trial?
Yes. Get in touch to book a free trial at our Bracknell dojo on Monday or Wednesday evening. You can also call 07739 464 005 or email info@shuhari.com.
Is there parking at St Michael's Centre?
Yes. The centre has on-site parking. The venue is located on Crowthorne Road in Easthampstead, close to the Bracknell Leisure Centre.
How long does it take to progress?
That depends on how often you train and what you want to achieve. Students who attend both Monday and Wednesday sessions typically notice meaningful improvements in fitness, technique, and confidence within the first year. Belt gradings are available as you progress. For realistic timelines, read our guide to martial arts progression.
Can I train more than twice a week?
Bracknell offers two sessions per week (Monday and Wednesday). If you want to train more often, your membership gives you access to all six Shuhari locations. Many Bracknell students add a session at our Slough dojo on Thursdays or Saturdays, or attend Maidenhead on Wednesdays or Fridays.
