Your High Wycombe Instructors

Monday Instructor: Sensei John Moses

Sensei John Moses is a 2nd Dan Black Belt and an experienced Shuhari instructor. His classes combine technical martial arts training with practical self-defence and progressive physical development.

John is known for thoroughly testing techniques and encouraging students to understand not simply how a technique works, but whether it remains effective when faced with realistic resistance.

Sunday Instructor: Sensei Vuyo Halimana

Sensei Vuyo Halimana is a 1st Dan Black Belt. Her sessions follow the Shuhari syllabus while helping students develop their technique, fitness, confidence and practical self-defence skills in a supportive training environment.

Having two weekly sessions gives High Wycombe students the flexibility to train at the beginning or end of the week – or attend both classes to progress more quickly.

Kids Martial Arts in High Wycombe

Martial arts can offer children much more than learning how to punch, kick or defend themselves.

Our children's martial arts classes in High Wycombe help develop:

  • Confidence and self-esteem
  • Anti-bullying skills
  • Discipline and concentration
  • Fitness and coordination
  • Situational awareness
  • Respect for others
  • Resilience
  • Practical personal safety skills

Children learn in a structured but enjoyable environment where progress is recognised and encouraged.

For a child who lacks confidence, struggles with bullying or simply needs an enjoyable physical activity away from screens, martial arts can provide skills that extend well beyond the dojo.

Adult Martial Arts Classes in High Wycombe

You don't need previous martial arts experience – or to already be fit – to start training with Shuhari.

Many adults join because they want to improve their fitness while learning something practical.

You progress at your own pace, and beginners train alongside more experienced students in a friendly environment.

You don't have to be fit to start – training is what gets you fit.

Practical Self Defence

Knowing martial arts techniques is only one part of effective self-defence.

Real situations can involve fear, surprise, confined spaces, multiple people, weapons and difficult decisions about whether to escape, de-escalate or physically defend yourself.

That's why Shuhari training also explores the wider aspects of personal safety.

Students develop awareness, avoidance and de-escalation skills alongside physical techniques. As students progress, training introduces increasing levels of pressure and resistance so that techniques aren't practised only against a completely cooperative partner.

The goal is to have the confidence and skills to recognise danger, avoid unnecessary confrontation and protect yourself physically if needed.

Why Choose Shuhari MMA High Wycombe?

Our approach combines traditional martial arts values with modern, practical self-defence training.

Students who miss their usual class can also attend suitable classes at our other Shuhari locations or days.

  • What age can children start?

Children can join from age 7. We chose this age deliberately: younger children benefit more from play-based movement, while from age 7 their cognitive development is mature enough to engage with structured martial arts training that involves contact. There is no upper age limit for adults.

  • What styles of martial arts do you teach?

We are a hybrid system that draws techniques, principles and training methods from Karate, Kickboxing, Muay Thai, Boxing, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Judo, Wrestling, MMA, Krav Maga, Wing Chun Kung Fu, Taekwondo and Filipino Martial Arts. This integrated approach is central to our teaching philosophy and is explained in detail in our types of martial arts guide.

  • I've never done any martial arts. Will I cope?

Yes. You will not be expected to know techniques, terminology or keep up with experienced students straight away. Our instructors introduce you to the fundamentals and let you develop progressively. You don't have to be fit to start either, because the training is what gets you fit. If the idea of a first class feels daunting, read our beginner's guide.

  • Can my family train together?

Yes. Both High Wycombe sessions are children and adults classes, so parents can train alongside their children rather than watching from the sidelines. Our family classes are regularly recommended to parents who want to train with their kids.

  • Is there parking at Millbrook Combined and Nursery School?

Yes. There is a car park at the back of the school, reached via the access road on the left hand side of the building as you face it from Mill End Road.

  • What do children get out of martial arts training?

Our children's training places particular emphasis on confidence and self-esteem, anti-bullying skills, discipline and concentration, fitness and coordination, situational awareness, respect for others, resilience and practical personal safety. Children learn in a structured but enjoyable environment where progress is recognised and encouraged.

  • Do I need to buy a uniform or equipment?

Not straight away. Comfortable gym clothes are all you need for your first few sessions. Once you decide to continue, you can pick up a Shuhari gi at the dojo. No special equipment is required to begin.

  • Is there a free trial?

Yes. We offer a free trial class so you can experience a session before making any commitment. Contact us to arrange a time, or call 07739 464 005.

  • What if I miss my usual class?

Shuhari membership is not tied to a single venue. Students who miss their usual class can attend a suitable class at any of our other locations or on another day.
